Studio

Graphic designer, illustrator, author. Studio Claire Le Roy heightens image, text, signage and illustration with one same care: that no sign be left to chance.
Studio Claire Le Roy is an independent atelier founded by Claire Le Roy — illustrator, graphic designer and author. The studio works at the confluence of several crafts: visual identity, publishing, signage, illustration.
A single hand, however, runs through these plural practices: taking the time to look, preferring rightness to effect, making the typographic choice a decision of meaning as much as form, stirring wonder the better to reveal. Claire is a graduate of HEAR, the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (Strasbourg), after a BTS in visual communication at the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré (Paris) and a DEUG in fine arts at Paris I. This twin training — art as thought, design as craft — shaped the matrix of her approach.
For nearly four years, she contributed to the visual identity and overall communication of La Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine. There she learned the rigor of a graphic system sustained over several years, the coherence of a vision carried across very different media, the discipline of placing form at the service of a message.
She then co-founded with Mélanie Maxin the Atelier Beau/Voir, which over nearly fifteen years wove this singular voice for a wide range of clients: architecture practices, cultural spaces and venues, institutional and private commissioners. Close to twenty years of experience now feed every project the studio takes on, whether a full identity, an illustration, an exhibition's signage, a book or an invitation.
From this path comes a conviction that guides the studio: a graphic project is built in the care given to breathing space and in the attention paid to what must be said. The identity of a cultural institution, an author's book, the signage of an exhibition, the framing of an illustration — every creative gesture calls for the same care of making and the same clarity of intent. The studio refuses the idea that some media are minor: an exhibition label, a compliments slip, a colophon deserve the same exactingness as the cover that makes them known.
The work of Studio Claire Le Roy begins with meticulous listening: what the client says, what they hope for, what they do not yet know they are looking for. It unfolds in the acuity of choice — a typeface, a paper, a format, a white space. It crystallizes in the making, which is not a matter of the end but the place where everything takes form. At each stage, the studio cultivates the same demand: that form should speak. That nothing be decorative or gratuitous, but that every graphic element make sense within the story we set out to carry.
In the studio, work is shaped — through trials, through successive layouts, through retouches and highlights. It is a craft of making and balance, where one adjusts until the graphic thing stands on its own.
